Catastrophes are used to introduce students tophysics, meterology, epidemiology, the chemistry of greenhouse gases, and statistics. 60 students and five faculty on five campuses are linked by compressed video. Assignments emphasize critical thinking and writing skills, and include group projects, interpretation of data, analysis of journal articles, and mathematical and statistical modeling exercises.
