Workshop Details

The program will begin on Sunday evening, June 22, 2014 at 5:00 PM at the University of Maryland STAMP center. The workshop will conclude after dinner on Thursday evening, June 26. There is an optional visit to the National Science Foundation on June 27.

Workshop Check-In: Sunday, June 22

  • Workshop Check-in will take place in Annapolis Hall from 2:00pm-4:30pm, and in Prince George's Room at the STAMP Center from 5:00pm-9:00pm. Participant notebooks and name tags will be distributed at check-in.
  • Dorm Check-in is available after 12:00 noon in Annapolis Hall. Linens (pillow, pillowcase, sheets, blanket, 2 towels) will be provided, but toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc) are not; you will need to bring your own. Parking passes and meal cards can be picked up at the time of check-in. If you are not staying on campus, your parking pass will be available at either workshop check-in site. Dorm check-out time is 5:00 pm. You can contact the Service Desk at Annapolis Hall at 301-314-2662 with any questions. Annapolis Hall is open 24 hours a day for check-in. The doors to Annapolis Hall are frequently locked after 7pm. If you go to the door to the right, there will be a button to push and there is a number listed to dial. It rings to the front desk. You can let them know you are there to check in for the geoscience workshop and they will buzz you in.

Opening Activities

If you cannot arrive on Sunday in time for the 5 PM opening session and dinner, please plan to travel on Saturday and indicate that on your travel information form. Under these circumstances, we will arrange for housing for you on Saturday night.

Optional NSF Trip

We are offering an optional one-day trip to the National Science Foundation on Friday, June 27. We will start with an orientation session followed by small group meetings with program officers. Following that, NSF staff will offer group sessions on some specific NSF programs and you will be able to meet individually with NSF program officers. Transportation to NSF is on your own. This NSF trip is optional, but we encourage everyone, including faculty from two-year colleges, to attend.

If you opt to stay in DC on Friday night you will be responsible for finding accommodations and the cost of the extra night's stay.

Travel

Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the workshop. Maps and Directions to College Park are available on the U MD web site.

Transportation to College Park, MD by Air

Reagan National Airport (DCA) is the most convenient to College Park.

  • The campus is approximately a 30-minute drive/cab ride from the airport

If you attend the NSF trip, you may choose to fly home on the afternoon or evening of June 27. Travel time from the NSF offices to Dulles is at least one hour (and may be more during rush hour); to Reagan National you should allow at least one-half hour if during rush hour. The Washington DC Airport Shuttle serves both airports. They will pick up at the door and deliver to the airport.

Several Amtrak routes serve the DC area.

Use your favorite online map to get directions to the University of Maryland, College Park, MD.

Accommodations

Participants will stay at in single-occupancy rooms in suites on the University of Maryland campus. Linens (pillow, pillow case, sheets, blanket, 2 towels) will be provided but you will need to bring your own toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc). We will be staying in the South Hill Community, in Montgomery Hall. Workshop sessions will take place in the Adele Stamp Student Union and Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center.

On-Site Logistics

Internet Access:

Complimentary internet access will be available at the University of Maryland. Access instructions will be available at check-in.

Parking:

There will be a fee ($10/day) for parking at the University of Maryland. Please indicate if you will need a parking pass when you fill out your registration form. Passes can be picked up at Annapolis Hall when you check-in, or at the registration table if you are not staying on campus.

Recreation Center

Workshop participants will be able to purchase guest passes for the UMD gym at the Eppley Recreation Center. Passes are $7.00 a day and grant access to the Eppley Recreation Center (ERC), Cole Field House, Ritchie Coliseum, Reckord Armory, and the School of Public Health Building (SPH).

What to bring:

Dress will be casual during the workshop. Please be prepared for cool air-conditioned buildings and the hot/humid outdoors. Rain sometime during the week is likely. More formal attire is recommended for the NSF visit.

Meals:

All breakfasts and most other meals from Sunday dinner through Thursday dinner will be provided. There will be various options, including vegetarian entrees. We expect to be able to satisfy most food preferences and restrictions. If you are accepted to the workshop, you will have the opportunity to tell us about any special dietary restrictions on the registration form.

Breakfast will be in the South Campus Dining Hall, which opens at 7:00am daily. The dining hall is about a 5-minute walk from the dorm.
