Do you have a course or an assignment in mind that engages with visual objects and technologies? Are you looking for resources to design and implement new visual strategies in your class? Would you like to collaborate on creating and presenting interdisciplinary visual materials? Viz (Visualizing the Liberal Arts initiative) can help! We invite proposals for summer grants to support curricular development in visual pedagogies.

Summer 2010 Course Development Stipends will fund faculty for up to 6 weeks ($3600) to develop substantially new courses. Course Revision Stipends will fund shorter periods of work ($600 per week) for faculty who wish to create a new visual assignment or revise an existing course to incorporate visual materials.

Where appropriate to the proposed project, academic support professionals will be available to work with the faculty member to identify relevant resources, support, or expertise in order to develop a concrete production plan.

The grant embraces a broad range of curricular goals and particularly seeks to encourage partnerships among faculty members and staff. Additional funding may be requested for:

  • Consultants to help determine learning goals; identify and use the appropriate technology; estimate time requirements; identify sources of support for students. These consultants might include faculty colleagues with experience in visual assignments or technologies, or students with the necessary technological expertise.
  • Outside speakers for classes; resources and materials; software. Contact your liaison librarian to see if materials can be purchased through the library to enhance campus-wide access.

The competition will be open to all Carleton faculty who wish to innovate and to stretch their engagement with the visual in new directions, although particular attention will be given to team proposals in which faculty from fields that may not traditionally emphasize the visual partner with faculty and/or staff with expertise in visual fields. All grant recipients should expect to participate in the 2010 December break workshop and to publish their finalized assignments and syllabi as part of the initiative's web-based dissemination project.

Submit applications of up to 1,000 words to Susan Jaret McKinstry (mailto:sjaret@carleton.edu) by February 1, 2010. The Steering Committee for the Viz grant and the Dean of the College will review all proposals.
