Instrument Type

WHOLE ROCK ANALYSIS - XRF X-ray Fluorescence

Spectro Analytical X-lab 2000 Energy Dispersive Polarization XRF

Application:

Whole-rock analysis (major and trace element)

Typical Use:

Bulk major and trace element analysis of geological materials using fused beads and/or pressed powder pellets.

Conditions for Use:

Submitted samples will be analyzed on a contract basis (i.e. lab personnel will do the work).
Visitors are invited to work in the lab to work with lab personnel.

User Fees:

Contact Tom Fleming to discuss your project.

Instrument Priorities:

Priority use is for undergraduate student research projects, class demonstrations, and SCSU Earth Science faculty research.

Remote Use:

Instrument computer can be controlled or observed via the internet.

Sample Preparation:

Finely powdered rock, mineral, sediment, or soil. 0.3 gms of sample is required for analysis of fused glass disk that provides major elements and a limited number of trace elements. 4.0 gms of sample is required for analysis of pressed powder pellets which provides higher precision trace element concentrations.

Standard Collections/Lab Blanks:

The instrument is calibrated with wide a range of geological standards from USGS, GSJ, CRPG, NIST, etc. The primary focus of our calibrations is silicate-rich materials that include rocks, minerals, soils, and sediments. We have a more limited number of carbonate and coal standards. Interested users with special needs are welcome to provide their own standard materials to recalibrate the instrument.

Software:

Fully automated spectrometer with 20 position sample changer. X-LabPro software package accommodates a variety of analytical models including fundamental parameters (Turboquant), Lucas-Tooth and Price, extended Compton, Alpha coefficient correction.

Educational Use:

Class demonstrations are available for undergraduates.
Class demonstrations are available for K-12.
Undergraduate student research projects are invited.
Graduate student research projects are invited.
