Carleton Interdisciplinary Computational Modeling Workshop

Sponsored by HHMI, CISMI, QuIRK, ITS, Sigma Xi, LTC, SERC, & Mellon Faculty Lifecycles

Friday evening April 21

6-9 PM - Dinner at Headley House followed by an overview of computational modeling by Bob Panoff

Saturday April 22

8:30 AM - Continental breakfast CMC 110 lobby area

9-9:50 AM - Disciplinary-based groups exchange information about where they see potential for modeling in their fields. CMC breakout rooms

10-10:50 AM—Introduction to computational modeling tools and approaches for undergraduate learning. CMC 110

10:50-11 AM—Refreshments and beverages will be available throughout the morning. Please remember to keep food and drink away from CMC 110

11—11:50 AM - Cross-disciplinary groups meet to brainstorm a problem of mutual interest that students could attack using computational modeling. CMC breakout rooms

12-1:30 PM—Lunch. Here's an opportunity to rejoin your disciplinary group and share what you have learned in your cross-disciplinary discussions. SH 251

1:30—2:20 PM—More modeling tools that you might want to integrate into your teaching. CMC 110

2:20-2:30 - Refreshments and beverages will be available throughout the afternoon. Please remember to keep food and drink away from CMC 110

2:30—3:20 PM—Cross-disciplinary groups take the problem they identified earlier and build a plan for how a learning module could be developed. This could be an interdisciplinary module used in one course, one that is used in two complementary courses simultaneously, or a module that could be integrated into a term-long interdisciplinary computational modeling course (the first such course will be offered next spring). What would you need to move from your concept to implementation? CMC breakout rooms

3:30—4:30 PM—Cross-disciplinary groups report back CMC 110

Post-Workshop Homework:

1) Complete a workshop assessment on line.

2) Submit a brief description of your cross-disciplinary groups problem and approach to the organizers.

3) Wish list—E-mail Arjendu (apattana@carleton.edu) with your wish list of software or a modeling book that you would use to explore integrating computational modeling into your own course or to develop an interdisciplinary module with a colleague.
